The Many Faces of Hillary Clinton (Which Will Show Up Tonight?)

A headline at The Huffington Post raises a great question in the run up to the Ohio debate, “Which Hillary Will Show Up At Tonight’s Debate?” The question isn’t as silly as it sounds, in fact, it might be the only reason to watch the debate, except perhaps to see Hillary’s last performance before slipping into angry obscurity. In the span of five days (the number of days between debate #19 and debate #20) we have seen three completely different Hillarys:
- Friendly “I Found My Voice Yet Again” Hillary – We saw her at the very end of the Ohio debate, after a long debate of her attempting to land low blows against Obama (“change you can Xerox”, etc) she mustered her best Oscar face and told the country how much she cares about everyone (while showing herself to be a giant hypocrite by “plagiarizing” lines from both Bill Clinton and John Edwards), and saying, “I am honored to be here with Barack Obama. I am absolutely honored.” Awwww. Then two days later:
- Angry/Hypocritical “Shame On You Barack Obama” Hillary – We see a very angry Hillary waving about campaign mailers and accusing Obama of lying about her past support of NAFTA and her health care mandates. This is humorous because A) his mailers were pretty much right on, B) she has repeatedly sent out mailers blatantly lying about Obama’s record, and continues to do so, and C) he has been making those claims about her for weeks, and all of the sudden she is on stage feigning ire at them not because of the mailers, but because she had run out of other tactics, so indignation it was. Then the very next day:
- Childish/Disrespectful “Mocking” Hillary – This is the craziest Hillary yet. This Hillary came out to play during a campaign rally in Rhode Island, and boy what she appalling. While trying to push her completely disingenuous “talk vs action” attack (the same one that led her to diminish MLK’s legacy and importance to the Civil Rights movement) she mocked Obama and his message of change, unity, and doing the right thing, while simultaneously completely misrepresenting everything Obama has ever said about how change happens (not to mention demeaning the millions of voters who support Obama). This Hillary was petty and extremely unpresidential, coming off as more of a pathetic child than Bush ever has (which is saying a lot). I’d rather my president not throw temper tantrums whenever in a bind, and I’d definitely rather my president never so immature as to mock political leaders (or foreign leaders), let alone a respected member of their own party (and the person who is going to be their party’s nominee).
Post-Debate Update: Turns out she went with a mix of angry/hypocritical and fake/friendly. No childish Hillary, except maybe when she complained about being asked questions first and pointed to an SNL skit as evidence, that was pretty stupid.
